MALLETT INFORMED HE'S NOT THE MAN FOR THE JOB...
29th March 2012
THIS morning England Rugby head coach candidate, Nick Mallett was informed that his application had been unsuccessful, and thus the full time permanent position falls on the shoulders of a certain Mr Stuart Lancaster for the next four years until January 2016.
Folowing the interviews last Thursday for both candidates, RFU CEO Ian Ritchie spent two days clarifying in his opinion who was the best man for the job, after the Advisory Panel met again on Monday. The RFU Board unanimously ratified the decision this morning, and this afternoon, Lancaster was presented to the world's press by Ian Ritchie.
Stuart Lancaster has revolutionised his England Rugby squad since 8th December 2011, culling the mature stock, changing the mindset and culture of everyone involved, and has proved himself beyond any shadow of a doubt by winning four of his first five matches as the interim coach.
Now his job will be to pick his core management team - and breaking up the holy trinity of Lancaster, Rowntree and Farrell would simply be churlish. Graham 'Wig' Rowntree is no problem as he is on a rolling contract with the RFU already, so all that needs sorting is Andy 'Faz' Farrell, and no doubt the executive at Saracens have already had a call to ascertain how much it will cost the RFU to have Farrell back at HQ. As for all the talk of former RWC-winning All Black assistant coach, Wayne Smith, it remains to be seen whether he will be part of England Rugby.
Following the formal announcement, the 42-year-old Cumbrian said: "I am immensely honoured and proud to accept this role. From the hundreds of messages I received during the Six Nations I know what supporting England means to millions of people and I am privileged to be involved. The players, coaches and the management were superb during the tournament and it’s down to them that we made such positive steps from when we first met up in Leeds. The challenge now is to take this squad and the players we will see emerge forward to 2015. It is one that I can’t wait to get stuck into.
"We have a massive task ahead of us in South Africa this summer and we have 37 games before that first World Cup match on home soil, so every second counts in developing players who can win that tournament - which has to be the ultimate aim."
RFU CEO Ian Ritchie commented: "I am sure everyone in England will join me in congratulating Stuart on his appointment. He can be assured of my support and everyone in the Union as he embarks on what we all hope will be a successful period for English rugby."

INJURIES HAMPER TEAMS & PLAYERS ACROSS BOTH HEMISPHERES
28th March 2012
SHANE HORGAN, Leinster, Ireland and British & Irish Lion is the latest in a long line of rugby players forced into retirement due to injury. 207 caps for his club, 65 for his country, and 3 Lions caps is an impressive record for the 33 year old, who underwent knee surgery last year but has not recovered to full fitness despite rehabilitation. Just this month he joins fellow Irish Lion and Munster-man, Jerry Flannery who was forced to retire following a long spate of injuries, England flanker and Wasps captain, Tom Rees who’s knee was the final nail in his promising playing career at just 27, and Bath Rugby’s Andy Beattie, retired through an ankle injury.

Thankfully many injuries are just temporary, but they appear to hold no pattern as the northern hemisphere heads towards the end of its long season, with Ospreys’ Huw Bennett missing the remainder undergoing an Achilles tendon operation, and Wales and Cardiff Blues captain, Sam Warburton out for at least six weeks with shoulder damage. Down under, matters are far worse with Super Rugby only at week 5, but last year’s champions, the Queensland Reds are without star player Quade Cooper (knee), alongside Mike Harris (hamstring) and Ben Lucas (hamstring). And over at the Blues, flanker Jerome Kaino is out for the season and will not appear for his team again after confirming his move to the Japanese side, Toyota Verblitz; utility back Isaia Toeava is indefinitely indisposed, and last week saw the struggling side lose captain Keven Mealamu.
Medics and physios must be practising serious overtime as players appear to be dropping like flies…
SIX RUGBY PLAYERS DROWNED IN PE
27th March 2012
FOLLOWING a beach training session on Sunday morning, a number of the Motherwell RFC’s players were involved in a sea rescue incident in Port Elizabeth on Sunday which claimed the life of Msixole Myosana (29) after he was rescued, and five others were still missing. Rip-currents swept 21 people, many of them Eastern Cape rugby players, to sea at Port Elizabeth’s Blue Water Bay Beach, the NSRI Port Elizabeth reported.
This morning the police told relatives of five missing rugby players to accept that their relatives are presumed deceased, the Afrikaans newspaper, Beeld reported.
Four of the five Motherwell Rugby Club members who were still missing have been named as Xolisa Nyembezi (27), Arthur Peters (30), Lundi Muleka (29), and Avuyile Tshabalala (18). The fifth man could not be named yet as his family had not been informed.
South African Rugby Union President, Mr Oregan Hoskins said on Sunday, “I have spoken to the president of Eastern Province Kings rugby union and members of the community today and this is a devastating tragedy.
“To have their afternoon turned into a day of tragedy is shocking for the whole rugby community and our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.”
GATLAND LIKELY LIONS 2013 COACH
27th March 2012
IT was the world’s worst kept secret that Wales two-time Grand Slam winning coach, Warren Gatland was the no. #1 choice for the prestigious job of coaching the 2013 British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia next summer.
Only two weeks ago Gatland joked that the Lions may not be able to afford him, but on Wednesday, 21st March he was formerly interviewed in London and offered the job. But there are certain sticking points that need to be ironed out in order for another Kiwi to lead the tour.
Gatland is tied into a contract with the WRU which sees him through Rugby World Cup 2015, but the Lions are insisting the position is a 12 month job, and therefore his service would be required from the start of next season, making him unavailable for Wales’ Autumn tests against Argentina, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia, and he would play no part in next year’s Six Nations Championship when Wales will be defending their title.
WRU CEO, Roger Lewis has said: “There is no question that Warren will not be leading Wales on our very important tour to Australia and I, personally, would like him to be involved in our autumn.
“Warren does not have a clause in his contract which contains provision for him to coach the Lions, but we are hugely supportive of him and them.”
So the battle between nation and prestige continues; whatever the outcome (which will no doubt be in favour of the Lions & Gatland as coach), the coach will need to do a better job than the last New Zealander at the helm, rugby world cup-winning Graham Henry who presided over an hellish losing tour to Australia, plagued with discomfort and controversy. Not that rugby world cup-winning Sir Clive Woodward did any better in the 2005 Tour to New Zealand.
Gatland already has Lions experience as forwards coach on the 2009 Tour to South Africa when Sir Ian McGeechan was head coach. The British and Irish Lions have not won a Lions Tour since the 1997 Tour to South Africa.
HANKS BOOTED & DIAMOND TAKES OVER
26th March 2012
AFTER a disastrous Friday night encounter for the Sale Sharks were ravaged by the visiting Saracens 45 points to 9, the north western team parted company with head coach, Tony Hanks.
Director of Rugby, Steve Diamond curtly commented on Saturday, “It has been a season of great change at Sale Sharks and I would like to thank Tony for his help,” but only the evening before, when Hanks was most conspicuously absent from the post match press conference, “Defensively we were a shambles. The crowds have come over the last three or four home games and nobody likes people leaving early. There will be changes afoot all over the show.”
Hanks, who only signed a one year extension to his contract in February, had formerly left flailing London Wasps under somewhat of a cloud in 2011 after the club posted continually poor results.
Having lost the last two matches to a margin over 25 points, Chief Executive and Executive Director of Sport, Steve Diamond, has decided to take on the role of coach for the remainder of the season, until replacements can be found for next season. There is a vague memory of Harlequins CEO Mark Evans doing the same in recent times before Dean Richards saved the London club; it was not the most successful venture.
JONNY MITCHELL
1982 - 2012
26th March 2012
IT is with great regret that Scottish Rugby notes the passing of Jonny Mitchell, former club captain at North Berwick Rugby Club, who has died, aged 30.
In September 2005, he was seriously injured during a game between North Berwick RFC and Hawick Linden.
North Berwick RFC President and family friend Jim Littlefair helped establish the Jonny Mitchell Trust Fund to help Jonny and his family deal with the sudden demands of being wheelchair bound.
He said: “All of our lives changed the day Jonny was injured and he’s been in our thoughts since that day and he will remain there.”
Professional and club players alike joined in the fund-raising efforts for Jonny and his family and they also received help from charities Hearts and Balls and the Murrayfield Centenary Fund, which aims to assist players, and those connected with the game, who have been seriously injured.
SRU President, Ian McLauchlan said: “Jonny showed such tremendous courage in the face of adversity. He loved the game of rugby and even after his injury didn’t turn away from the sport. I’d like to pass on sincere condolences, from everyone at Scottish Rugby, to Jonny’s family for their loss.”
Jonny Mitchell died peacefully, just after midnight, Monday March 26, 2012. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

IRB RESTRUCTURES REFEREE SELECTION PROCESS...
24th March 2012
AS part of its ongoing review process and commitment to ensuring consistency and that the best referees are selected on form to officiate in the biggest matches in the run up to Rugby World Cup 2015, the IRB has announced a restructured and more streamlined selection process overseen by a vastly experienced committee.
Following a thorough review of performances during the recently concluded RBS 6 Nations, the selection committee's commitment to promoting consistency has been reflected in the latest selections with nine elite referees appointed to the top matches in what is a busy June international window.
- George Clancy (Ireland)
- Jérôme Garcès (France)
- Craig Joubert (South Africa)
- Nigel Owens (Wales)
- Jaco Peyper (South Africa)
- Chris Pollock (New Zealand)
- Romain Poite (France)
- Alain Rolland (Ireland)
- Steve Walsh (Australia)
Well, at least we know that there is one good referee in Nigel Owens. And that Bryce Lawrence is nowhere near the list. But Steve Walsh? Are they joking?
As part of the restructure, IRB Referee Manager Paddy O’Brien has stepped down after seven years, and will now focus his extensive experience into a similar role for Rugby Sevens, ahead of Rugby making its return to the Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
RWC 2011 ON COURSE FOR £90m NET PROFIT
22nd March 2012

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 New Zealand, hailed by the powers that be as an exceptional event, is on track to achieve a net surplus of more than £90 million, making RWC 2011 the second-highest revenue earning event in the history of the tournament. Gross commercial revenues achieved for Rugby World Cup 2011 of £142 million were within three per cent of the total achieved for the record-breaking France 2007, reaffirming the tournament as one of the world's premier sporting events.
The announcement is another boost for a tournament that exceeded all revenue, ticketing and visitor forecasts for the host nation and tournament organisers Rugby New Zealand 2011 Limited. This was the largest event ever hosted in the country. More than 1.35 million fans took their seats at 48 matches with revenue from ticket sales surpassing the NZ$268.5 million (£140 million) target set by RNZ 2011.
In addition, more than 133,000 fans travelled to New Zealand from overseas, nearly double original forecasts. The tournament is estimated to have boosted economic activity in New Zealand by more than NZ$500 million (£260 million), delivering a significant return for the host nation, as well as delivering a significant boost to the ongoing development of rugby worldwide.

He played most of his rugby for the Brumbies from 1996, and moved to Toulon in 2007 for a year, before ending his illustrious career with a year at Suntory Goliath in Japan.

TIGERS FIRST THROUGH TO HEINEKEN CUP 2012/13 WITH LV= CUP WIN
19th March 2012
LEICESTER TIGERS are the first team to automatically qualify for the Heineken Cup 2012-13 next season.
Geordan Murphy lifted the LV= Cup at Worcester's Sixways stadium as Leicester won the battle of the East Midlands against Northampton 26-14 to claim the first silverware of the English club rugby.
The match was settled soon after half-time as wing Scott Hamilton ran 80 metres after intercepting an ambitious pass from Saints fly-half Stephen Myler.
Teenage fly-half George Ford, who kicked a match tally of 16 points, had kept the Tigers in touch with three penalties before flanker Steve Mafi gave them the lead for the first time in the 26th minute. Northampton, winners of the competition two years ago, did not manage a try until five minutes from time, through lock Christian Day.

MICHAEL JAMES "JOCK" BOWIE HOBBS, CNZM was a former captain of the All Blacks with 21 caps for his country. From 2002 he was chairman on the New Zealand Rugby Union, but stepped down in 2010 after he contracted leukaemia, a battle hi fought hard but lost on 13th March , 2012.
Born in Christchurch, Jock Hobbs played for the first XV at Christ's College and then Canterbury. He made his test debut as flanker at 23 years old for the All Blacks in 1983 against the British & Irish Lions. And before his second test he was admitted to the bar and became a practising barrister, before taking onthe role of rugby adminstrator.
It was Hobbs' determination and drive that resulted in the award of Rugby World Cup 2011 to New Zealand in 2005, and the same year he was named New Zealander of the Year by the New Zealand Herald.
Hobbs was present at the Rugby World Cup Final in Eden Park to witness Richie McCaw lifting the Webb Ellis Cup and, the following day, he won the prestigious Vernon Pugh Award for Distinguished Service at the 2012 IRB Awards ceremony in Auckland.

MAD DOG MOODY FORCED TO RETIRE
Tuesday 6th March 2012
LEWIS MOODY, former England Captain and Bath Rugby flanker has been forced to announce his retirement from all rugby. Renowned for his fearless style of play, Lewis Moody has been putting his body on the line for club and country for 16 years.
Making his first appearance for Leicester Tigers in 1996, Lewis went on to play at the club for 14 years, including 217 games and 32 tries before moving to Bath Rugby in the summer of 2010.
With 71 caps for his country and three for the British and Irish Lions, he is one of the very few players to have consistently excelled in world rugby for the duration of his career. As the most capped England flanker he is also one of the most decorated, with winners medals from seven Premiership titles, two Heineken Cups, one LV=Cup, two RBS Six Nations Championships and one Rugby World Cup.
Moody ended his career as one of the most decorated players in Premiership history.
Lewis 'Mad Dog' Moody said: "It is with great sadness that I have to announce my immediate retirement from all forms of rugby. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the medics and physios who have put me back together time and time again to enable me to continue to play this wonderful sport of ours.
"I would like to thank all of the coaches that I have worked with during my career, from Bracknell minis to the British and Irish Lions; they have all left their mark on me as a player.
"It goes without saying how much I value the fans who have supported me so loyally over the years, it has been one of life’s singular pleasures to have played this game in front of you."
"Lewis has been a credit to the league over his 14 years on the pitch and at Premiership Rugby we are sad to hear of his announcement,” said Premiership Rugby Chief Executive Mark McCafferty.
"It’s difficult to imagine a more committed player than Lewis, someone who represented club and country with dignity, passion and a never-say-die attitude. I think it is fair to say when Lewis Moody first stepped on the field for the Leicester Tigers they broke the mould."
Rugby World Cup winning captain and former England coach, Martin Johnson who played alongside Lewis for Leicester and England before coaching him, said: "When I look back at playing with Lewis it always brings a smile to my face – it was never dull. He was one of the most committed guys I ever played with and had a complete disregard for his own physical wellbeing. It’s sad that he has had to retire but he should be remembered for a great career and someone who never gave less than 100 percent for his club and country."
IRISH TICKETS FROM FRANCE MATCH REFUND PROCEDURES...

The Irish Rugby Football Union has today announced that it has reached agreement with the French Rugby Federation for the refunding of the face value cost of match tickets for the postponed France versus Ireland RBS 6 Nations Championship Match on Saturday, February 11.
The process for seeking a refund is as follows:
-
The French Rugby Federation (FFR) has agreed to a closing date of Thursday, 23rd February for the return and refunding of the full match ticket price.
-
In order to achieve this deadline, all tickets must be received by 5.00pm, Tuesday 21st February within Ireland.
-
Tickets that were purchased through a provincial club or www.irishrugby.ie can be returned to any of the provincial branch offices in Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster or to the IRFU head office at 10-12 Lansdowne Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
-
The IRFU will then coordinate the return of the tickets to the French Rugby Federation and follow through on securing the refunds. It is anticipated this process could take until the end of March.
-
The FFR will only refund actual physical tickets that are returned.
-
The FFR have indicated that all other tickets purchased by Irish supporters outside of the allocation given to the IRFU must contact their point of purchase directly in order to claim a refund e.g. tickets bought through travel agents or ticket sites must be refunded through those outlets.
-
All match tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled game on Sunday, 4th March 2010. However, the FFR will not be reissuing tickets for the game, so they will not permit entry to the Stade de France unless the same match ticket is produced at the venue on the new match day.
Philip Browne, IRFU Chief Executive said, "While the timelines are not ideal for supporters, we have pushed hard to get this undertaking from the French Federation to refund ticket costs for Irish supporters who are unable to attend the rescheduled match. The team, and the IRFU, hugely appreciate the effort and expense Irish Supporters went to in order to be at the match and we hope this gesture will go some way towards making up for the inconvenience they suffered".
FRANCE IRELAND TO GO AHEAD IN MARCH...BUT NO COMPENSATION FOR LAST TIME YET
Tuesday 14th February 2012
THE postponed France vs Ireland RBS Six Nations match has finally been rescheduled for Sunday 4th March 2012, with a kick off time of 4pm CET (3pm GMT) at the Stade de France in St Denis.
The Irish Rugby Football Union had requested a Saturday afternoon match. This was based on providing the Ireland team, who will be travelling for a second time to Paris, with a seven day turnaround between its remaining four fixtures in the tournament as well as providing any supporters wishing to attend the rescheduled game with an appropriate window of travel.
Both proposed dates were discussed by the Six Nations Council, but the decision was taken by the majority of the Council to proceed with the date of March 4th. So the fans lose out for a second time.
The Fédération Française de Rugby have agreed to a full refund of the ticket price to those who cannot attend the match, but as yet there is not a hint of compensation for the incompetance of last Saturday's debacle.
Below is the full statement from the Six Nations Council:
"Following the very regrettable postponement of the France v Ireland match last Saturday which left thousands of supporters disappointed and frustrated, the Six Nations Council wish to announce that the postponed RBS 6 Nations match between France and Ireland will now take place on Sunday 4th March at 4pm French local time (3pm GMT) in the Stade de France.
The Six Nations Council can also confirm that French & Irish ticket holders unable to attend the match will receive a full refund of their match ticket. Final details of the refund mechanism should be available tomorrow.
The RBS 6 Nations Championship format dictates that a match postponed in weeks one or two of the competition will be rescheduled to take place in either week three or, as in this case, week five of the tournament.
Commenting on the rescheduled match details John Feehan, Chief Executive, Six Nations said,
'We are delighted that we have agreed a new date and time for the RBS 6 Nations France vs Ireland match in the RBS 6 Nations window. We are also delighted that the FFR have announced a ticket refund scheme.'"
ALL BLACK LEGEND JONAH LOMU NEEDS 2ND KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
12th February 2012
JONAH LOMU's career was cruelly cut short at its height when he was diagnosed with nephritic syndrome, a rare kidney disease in 1996. He spent much time having dialysis three times a week until a donor was found in 2004. A successful transplant allowed him to return to good health, and even make a comeback in rugby. Following his star role in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup 2011, he was admitted to hospital but released before the tournament ended.
But having lost 30kg since that time, the Kiwi giant revealed to New Zealand Woman's Weekly in an interview that recently he has been receiving 21 hours of dialysis a week, and that another transplant is required.
"We were hoping to see some improvement but nothing has made any difference, so the next step is to try to find a donor," Lomu said.
In the 8 years from 1994 while he was at the top of his game, 36 year old, 6'5" winger, Lomu won 63 caps and scored 36 tries bulldozing all manner of rugby players in the process, leaving a spectacular trail in his wake, including 2 world cups.
THE GREATEST FRENCH FARCE OF ALL?
12th February 2012

AT 7.30pm referee Dave Pearson and officials were out inspecting the pitch at the Stade de France prior to the France Ireland game due to kick off 90 minutes later, and was given the all clear. Ten minutes before kick off, coaches Philippe Saint-André and Declan Kidney joined Pearson et al on the pitch again, and subsequently the players were informed the match was off due to a freezing pitch; the fans were not told for another ten minutes.
The weather had not suddenly deteriorated; Paris had been experiencing sub-zero temperatures all week. It was always going to be this way. So cancelling the match was simply poor judgement at the 11th hour. The capacity crowd - many of whom had coughed up nigh on a €1,000 travelling from Ireland with partners on Valentine's weekend - were understandably furious at the way they were treated.
Yes player safety is paramount, and no you cannot play on a surface that could potentially seriously damage the professionals since rugby is such a physical game. But how an iconic stadium which was only built in 1995 does not have under soil heating is in itself ridiculous.
The farce arose from the manner the entire incident was handled, not because it was the first game to be postponed due to the weather since 1985. Eventually the French captain, Thierry Dusautoir ventured out to speak to the crowd, but the blame game was just about to kick off. Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) President, Pierre Camou alluded to Dave Pearson being at fault at the press conference.
"I cannot speak for the referee as he for his own reasons has chosen not to appear to explain himself. I watched the Italy v England game earlier on where the pitch was covered in snow in places, and I would like to remind you that the referee was French!" he jibed. But sub-zero weather and a wind-chill factor taking the temperature down to -11° were not a factor in snow-covered Rome. The pitch at the Stadio Olimpico was not frozen nor dangerous.
"The pitch was unsafe for the players and the protocol is the referee has to make a decision," Ireland coach Declan Kidney told the BBC. "In fairness to him he's made the right one."
France coach Saint-André commented: "We would have preferred to play. The changing room was electric, the players were really ready to play but you have to respect the referee's decision, it's he who is in charge of players' safety."
It was not the referee's fault but entirely that of the Six Nations and FFR. There was no hope of the weather improving at the weekend and therefore the game could have been called off as early as Thursday. But then the FFR would not be rubbing their hands in glee at taking all the revenue from last night, with the prospect of doubling it with the rematch when many fans will not bother trekking all that way again from Ireland or South West France so the tickets will be resold.
The handling of the entire situation was a complete debacle, and we all await news from RBS Six Nations. In fact, we are still waiting for any communication at all via the normal channels to alert us the match has been cancelled 12 hours after the fact.
Seasoned Telegraph rugby journalist, Brendan Gallagher tweeted last night, "Post match "press conference" the most embarrassing and incompetent I have attended in 30 years as a journo".
And to make matters worse, news now emerges that France TV proposed moving the match from 9pm to a 3pm kick off. Since professional sport is today at the mercy of broadcasting rights holders, this would have made infinitely more sense.
There is as yet no date for a rematch, but suspected it will be one of the free weekends in the tournament, either next week on Friday or Sunday, since Stade Français have already sold out the stadium for their Top 14 clash with Toulon on Saturday, or the weekend of 2/3/4 March.
SARACENS HEAD TO HONG KONG TO CHALLENGE CHARTIS CUP
10th February 2012
NOT content with just Abu Dhabi after the Cape Town match fell through, Saracens will make their debut in Hong Kong this summer when they take on a star-studded Asia Pacific Barbarians team in the Chartis Cup, supported by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, and will be played on Saturday 9th June at Hong Kong Stadium.

Saracens have pledged to bring their strongest available team to face an APBs line-up that will include 2011 Rugby World Cup winner Mils Muliaina, now playing in Japan after winning 100 caps for his country, and will be joined in the APBs line-up for the Chartis Cup by flying Fijian Sireli Bobo and Samoan brothers Alesana and Henry Tuilagi.
Mark McCall, Saracens’ Director of Rugby, added: "Hong Kong represents something special in the rugby world. It is a privilege for us to have been invited to play a 15-man match against a strong Asia Pacific Barbarians team and we are very much looking forward to the occasion."
Chartis and match organisers have pledged that proceeds from the event will go towards the Royal Project office in Thailand, under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to renovate schools hit by flooding last year and help students from very poor families with the expense of attending classes.
The inaugural Chartis Cup was staged last June at Hong Kong Football Club with ticket sales and donations generating more than US$50,000 for children and families affect by the Japan earthquake and tsunami.
DAN PARKS RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL RUGBY
7th February 2012

SCOTLAND stand-off Dan Parks today announced his retirement from international rugby with immediate effect.
In his eight year international career, Parks won 67 caps for Scotland, scoring 266 points, including a Scottish record 17 drop-goals.
He was the pivotal figure in Scotland’s successes in 2010, winning a host of Man of the Match awards and steering the side to a historic, unprecedented Test series triumph in Argentina and memorable victories against Ireland and South Africa. It should also be remembered that he was the Scotland players’ player of the World Cup in 2007, testament to his talent and his immense popularity with his peers.
Parks (Cardiff Blues), 33, had been thinking over his decision following the Rugby World Cup, in which he was Man of the Match in the final pool game against England.
He told Scottish Rugby: “I was thinking about it but the first game of the Six Nations was against England, the auld enemy, Jacko (Ruaridh Jackson) was injured and being able to play against England was huge for me as there was a sense of unfinished business.
“On reflection after the game, after talking it over with my family, girl-friend and close friends I’ve come to the decision that now is the right time to retire from the international game.
“I’ve no regrets at what has been an amazing career for me. I’ve got my favourite moments for Scotland – uppermost being the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
“I also want to thank the loyal fans of the Scotland team. It’s been a rocky road for me at times but at the end I’ve always given 100 per cent to play at my best and succeed for Scotland.
“This is not the end of me as a rugby player. My international career is over but I want to keep playing club rugby. I always enjoyed my time in Glasgow. It’s one of great cities I’ve visited, so who knows what will happen in the future.”

MEYER TO BE APPOINTED NEW BOKKE COACH?
25th January 2012

HEYNEKE MEYER, currently with the Blue Bulls, has a had a formal approach by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) for the position of Springbok Head Coach.
Meyer, who previously coached the Leicester Tigers, was expected to take over the position in 2008 from Jake White, but SARU then appointed Peter de Villiers in a decision that appeared to be more political than on merit, and the Springbok fortunes rollercoasted under the coach. Despite being the incumbent championship winners, the Springboks hastily exited the 2011 Rugby World Cup at the quarter final stage beaten by Australia under de Villiers.
A decision likely confirming the appointment will be formerly announced on Friday, 27th January, though it is known that the Blue Bulls are understandably reluctant to let Meyers go.
FRANCE DOMINATE THE EUROPEAN RUGBY SCENE
23rd January 2012
THE weekend saw the culmination of six hard fought rounds of European Cup rugby which was nail biting to the final 5 minutes on Sunday afternoon.
This year sees France dominate the knock-out stages yet again with six teams across the Heineken and Amlin Challenge Cups. But it is Ireland that has three of it's four professional sides in the senior competition, with Munster and Leinster topping the rankings, and Ulster sneaking in eighth position. Saracens is the only team representing England in the Heineken Cup after a thrilling match against Benetton Treviso who put up a spirited fight, but London Wasps, Harlequins and Exeter Chiefs have all qualified for the Amlin Challenge. Wales is represented by the Cardiff Blues who provided an exciting battle against Racing Métro 92 where the lead changed hands continually in the first half.
In front of a record crowd at Murrayfield, the 78th minute of the penultimate match of the Heineken Cup saw Edinburgh bag pole position in Pool 2 with a bonus point try, seamlessly converted by the brilliant Greig Laidlaw, despite the Scottish side losing three core players before kick off. They now have the daunting task of facing the tournament's most prolific champions Toulouse, but they will have home advantage.

PATERSON TO SAY HIS FINAL ADIEU AT MURRAYFIELD
16th January 2012

SCOTLAND supporters will have the chance next month to show their appreciation for the record-breaking career of one of the country’s favourite sons.
Chris Paterson, Scotland’s cap and points record-holder, announced his international retirement last month, saying the time was right to bow out from his glittering 12-year Test match run.
Paterson’s last international was the Rugby World Cup match against England at Eden Park, Auckland back in October. Now, next month’s Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield – Scotland’s opening match in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations Championship – will give Scotland fans the opportunity to bid him farewell in the stadium that he graced from his debut against Spain in 1999.
Before the action kicks-off on Saturday 4 February, Paterson will present the match ball and fans will have the opportunity to acclaim his contribution.
Paterson said: "I’ve always treasured the support I’ve had throughout my career. I’ve spoken about getting goose-bumps with some of the cheers I’ve had at Murrayfield and the response I’ve had from Scotland fans since I announced my retirement has been almost over-whelming.
"I’ll be at Murrayfield for the Calcutta Cup game, firstly as a Scotland supporter, and secondly to say thanks."
SELORM KUADEY
1987 - 2012
16th January 2012
ONCE a promising young rugby talent at Sale Sharks who represented England at U19, U20 and 7s, Selorm Kuadey sadly passed away yesterday in an apparent suicide.
Tributes are being paid throughout the rugby community to former Sharks' player. Following the shattering news of Selorm's death, RPA CEO Damian Hopley said: "We are all shocked to the core by this tragic news about Selorm. He was an outstanding professional and brilliant young man who was so popular and respected by his team mates and peers across the game.
"On behalf of all the RPA members, we send our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this terrible time."
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Kuadey was plagued with ankle injuries which cut short his professional rugby career, but he refocused his energies, graduated with a First Class Honours in Human Biology and Infectious Diseases from the University of Manchester last year and was working as a business manager for an orthotics company before his death.
The Rugby Players' Association had been heavily involved in assisting Kuadey following his retirement from the game, and do urge any players who believe they were struggling with mental issues to use their specialised counselling service.
A valuable member of the Sale Sharks for 5 years, Chief Executive Mick Hogan said:
"Everyone at Sale Sharks passes their deepest sympathies to Selorm’s family and friends at this very difficult and upsetting time. Selorm was a very popular young man and a wonderfully talented rugby player. We are devastated to learn about his tragic death and the club is offering our full support to his family, friends and former team mates during this deeply traumatic period."
JONNY SEXTON WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
16th January 2012

JONATHAN SEXTON has been voted Bank of Ireland Leinster Rugby Player of the Month for November/December.
Jonny featured in 6 games including all the Heineken Cup matches, and amassed an impressive three Man of the Match performances over that period.
Against defending League champions Munster and in front of a crowd of 48,000 Sexton steered over 7 penalties to ensure Leinster won a captivating tie back in November. There were other memorable kicking feats during this time with perhaps the highlight being the injury-time penalty against Montpellier, salvaging a draw away from home.
Sexton would score all of Leinster’s points in his Man of the Match performance at The Rec against Bath in December. In the return fixture in the Aviva Stadium Sexton again proved key running the line with efficiency and purpose, scoring a try, six conversions and one drop goal.
"I would like to thank Bank of Ireland for their sponsorship of this award, but most of all to the Leinster supporters who voted for me, I am hugely honoured by their backing."
Winning the monthly award puts Jonathan in contention for the Bank of Ireland Player of the Year award which is announced at the Annual Leinster Awards Ball.
ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST AT BAYONNE
16th January 2012

AVIRON BAYONNAIS has shown yet another coach the door after just 6 weeks at the helm. Former Japan coach, Jean-Pierre Elissalde was brought in to turn the fortunes of the club which is fighting to rise into the respectable echelons of the Top 14 table at the start of December.
Since Elissalde took over, Bayonne have drawn one and lost two Top 14 matches, and even though they are topping their Pool 3 table in the Amlin Challenge Cup winning two of the last three matches. But a 50% win rate is not acceptable to the paymasters, the former French half-back, Jean-Baptiste Elissalde's father is now out of a job, and backs coach Didier Faugeron -who arrived from Stade Français Paris last summer- is taking over the reins...for now.

BROWN NAMED AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUGBY PLAYER OF THE MONTH
12th January 2012

MIKE BROWN of Harlequins and now England Rugby has been voted the Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for December.
The Harlequins’ full-back was chosen as the month’s stand out performer by a panel of distinguished rugby media – including writers, broadcasters and photographers.
“Mike has reinvented himself this year and turned himself into a world class player who we believe will deservedly make his Test debut in this year's RBS 6 Nations," said Panel Chairman Paul Morgan.
"He exemplifies the reasons why Harlequins sit on top of the Aviva Premiership and the award is our way or showing how impressed we have been with Mike's form."
Brown received a cheque for £500 to donate to a charity of his choice, and he said "I’ve chosen Macmillan Caring Locally. The reason I have chosen this charity is because my Gran recently passed away. Before she passed on, she asked for people to donate to the charity, instead of buying flowers for her funeral, as it was a charity that she supported. So in memory of her, I would like to donate to Macmillan Caring Locally."
GOLD TO SAVE NEWCASTLE FROM RELEGATION...
12th January 2012
NEWCASTLE FALCONS owner Semore Kurdi today announced that former Springbok assistant coach, Gary Gold has been appointed as Director of Rugby for the remainder of the current season.
Joining the Springboks as forwards coach in 2008 under head coach Peter de Villiers, Gold was part of the South Africa set-up which won the Tri Nations as well as the British and Irish Lions series in 2009.
Gold began his coaching career as assistant coach at London Irish in 2001 before being promoted to the position of head coach the following year. After three seasons at Irish, Gold moved to Vodacom Stormers as technical director prior to his switch to Western Province as head coach, and therefore can boast vast Premiership as well as Super 14 experience.
“This is an exciting challenge and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in the Aviva Premiership,” said Gold.
“Newcastle Falcons is a big club with big ambitions and an owner who is very determined so anything is possible. I know a lot about the players and the traditions of the club so I am really looking forward to the challenge of keeping top-flight rugby in the North East,” added Gold.
He will be joined at Kingston Park by Mike Ford who will fulfil the role of defence coach, formerly of England Rugby, though he will also remain as consultant to Leeds Carnegie as well until the end of this season.
Alan Tait has taken a break from rugby but the remainder of the coaching staff will continue to support Gold and Ford as the club strives to maintain its Aviva Premiership status.
In addition, the Falcons have announced the appointment of James Ponton as the new academy head coach. Ponton, 37, will work alongside academy manager Mark Laycock as the club strives to capture and develop the very best young talent from across the region.
Following a successful stint with West Hartlepool, Ponton moved to Leeds Tykes where he had six seasons with the Premiership outfit and worked under current England coach Stuart Lancaster before becoming player coach at Sedgley Park.

England vs Ireland Legends
The Stoop - Friday 16th March 2012
KO 7.30pm

The money raised from the match will be donated three charities which raise money to help deal with life threatening injuries for both professional and amateur players within the sport.
Following a crowd of 11,000 in the last home game, the Legends will aim to sell out this highly competitive clash with a capacity crowd of 14,000 at The Stoop. The Irish will be challenging for The Stuart Mangan Memorial Cup, currently held by the English Legends who reclaimed the trophy at Donnybrook in 2011.
England’s team will be led by former captain and British and Irish Lion Martin Corry. Martin is joined by several members of the England 2003 World Cup winning team including, Jason Leonard, most notably England’s most capped player, Josh Lewsey, Kyran Bracken and Dan Luger.
Ireland’s team will be led by Ireland and British and Irish Lion Shane Byrne, previously Leinster’s most capped player. His team will include such Irish legends as Nick Popplewell, Rob Henderson, Mick Galway, Mal O’Kelly, Eric Miller and Girvan Dempsey.
Looking forward to the game Jason Leonard said, “The Legends series has seen some really competitive clashes and the 2012 game will be no exception. We will certainly be looking to entertain in front of a home crowd and retain the Stuart Mangan Trophy with some lightning speed and slick passing….. or perhaps with just a little luck and the buzz of getting back on the pitch! It is such a great opportunity for all our players to support those who need our assistance and to give something back to this wonderful game.”

RWCL CONFIRMS NZ$400,000 DONATION TO BOOST CHRISTCHURCH RUGBY COMMUNITY
4th January 2012
THE Christchurch Rugby community has been given a significant boost after Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) confirmed a donation of NZ$400,000 through the RWC Christchurch Appeal to assist with Rugby infrastructure restoration at all levels.
Well-wishers from around the world joined Rugby World Cup 2011 participating teams and fans in supporting the Appeal, which was launched on the eve of Rugby’s showcase event, by making donations via the official website.
The donation will specifically assist with the restoration of Rugby infrastructure at all levels following the devastating earthquakes that struck the region earlier this year and continuing aftershocks. The NZ$400,000 donation includes a significant contribution from RWCL and is in addition to the strong support demonstrated by IRB Member Unions and RWC 2011 participating teams throughout 2011.
Teams, including Australia, England, France, Scotland and New Zealand all demonstrated their support for the Appeal through separate donations or visits to Christchurch during Rugby World Cup 2011.
With Rugby very much at the heart of the community in the city, all donations will be passed on to the Canterbury Rugby Earthquake Charitable Trust, administered by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, to support the work of the Trust in targeting communities that have been hit the hardest.

NEW LOOK ENGLAND RUGBY MOVING UP NORTH
4th January 2012

ENGLAND will move their pre-tournament training base ahead of the RBS 6 Nations to Leeds.
They will use facilities around the North Leeds area, including West Park Leeds RUFC – a Level 8 Yorkshire Division Two club – and weights facilities at the Leeds Rugby Academy at Kirkstall during their January 23-27 camp as they prepare to defend their RBS 6 Nations title.
England have spent their January training week in Portugal for the last three years and while they will still be based at Pennyhill, Surrey, during Test weeks, Head Coach Stuart Lancaster explained the change of venue for this particular five days.
“There are a variety of reasons we wanted to use a different venue centred around wanting to keep the camp in this country,” said Lancaster.
“The main objectives of the camp are to spend some time together, building the team, reviewing the World Cup but more importantly working together on setting our goals for the Six Nations and beyond and getting on the same page with our rugby game plan.
“By keeping it in England we can create a “new” feel to the camp, in what is a new start. It will allow us to train in conditions that we will be facing up at Murrayfield, create opportunities for the team to stay connected with the public, and allow us to invite in one or two people from outside of rugby to help us shape our future.”
